The basics: turning sunlight into electricity

What the inverter does

Instead of sending that power to the grid for a few cents, you keep it and use it in the evening when your panels aren't generating. Given that grid electricity can cost 30 to 45 cents per kWh, the saving per kilowatt-hour stored and used at home is significant.
Batteries don't change how the panels work. They simply add a storage layer between generation and export. A hybrid inverter manages the charging and discharging automatically.
What the meter tracks
Your home's smart meter records two key figures: how much electricity you import from the grid, and how much you export. Both are visible on your electricity bill and usually in your retailer's app. This data helps you understand your solar self-consumption — the percentage of your solar generation that you use directly in your home, which is the main driver of your bill savings.
Does solar work on cloudy days?
Yes, though output is reduced. Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not direct sunshine, so they still produce power on overcast days, just less of it. A Melbourne system will generate noticeably less on a heavily cloudy winter day than a clear summer day, but it will still be producing throughout the year.
How long do systems last?
Quality solar panels typically come with a 25-year performance warranty, guaranteeing they'll produce at least 80 to 85 per cent of their original output after that period. In practice, well-maintained systems often last longer. Inverters generally have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years and are the most likely component to need replacement over a system's lifetime. Batteries (if installed) typically last 10 to 15 years depending on usage and chemistry.
